- To increase compassionate practices amongst attendees
Why are we doing this?
The need is beyond great. The global AIDS crisis is the largest pandemic the world has ever known – and as compassionate human beings, we must reach out with a sense of urgency, energy and purpose.
In the 2007 AIDS Epidemic report, the World Health Organization estimates 33.2 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, southern Africa being the epicenter of the global pandemic. With some countries in Southern Africa experiencing infection rates of more than 30%, HIV/AIDS threatens to wipe out a generation of people and devastate an entire continent. It is impossible to overstate the scope and urgency of the need.
Compelled 2008 has joined forces with frontline grassroots staff who work in the trenches of this pandemic as a means to financially support their tireless efforts. Through partnering with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), funds are reaching those in the heart of the pandemic in a variety of areas including:
- training home-care volunteers to aid people dying of HIV/AIDS
- organizing youth to provide peer education regarding HIV/AIDS prevention
- providing funds for HIV testing and fostering ways to decrease the stigma
- ensuring orphaned children are provided with the resources to continue living
